Pali Primer

WB1PP-b

by Lily de Silva  MA, PhD.
For beginners as a stepping-stone to more advanced work.

Thirty-two easy lessons in Pali, each including basic vocabulary, brief grammatical explanations and exercises. The book provides beginners a good introduction to basic Pali grammar.

The present work is an entirely new effort based on the same principle of teaching grammar through composition, using a gradually expanding controlled vocabulary, selected on the basis of types frequently occurring in the language. Cases are introduced one by one using only masculine nouns ending in -a at he beginning, with exercises in sentence formation with present tense, third person, singular and plural verbs whose bases end in -a. Grammatical forms such as the gerund / absolutive and the infinitive, which are very frequent in the language are soon introduced to enable the student to form longer and more complex sentences.
Once the student has mastered the basic structure, other grammatical syntactical forms are taught one by one, following the principle of introducing forms which bear a similarity / affinity in morphology to those already learnt. Translation from and into Pali form an integral part of each lesson.

This book is meant for beginners and gives only an introduction to Pali grammar. It is designed as a convenient stepping stone to more advanced works such as A.K. Warder´s Introduction to Pali.

by Lily de Silva MA, PhD.
The Pali Primer by Lily de Silva published by Vipassana Research Institute is an introduction to Pali grammar for beginners. It is based on the principle of teaching grammar through composition using a gradually expanding vocabulary. Exercises requiring translation from an into Pali form an integral part of each lesson.

Many students who found this book very useful have requested that the answer to the exercises in the Pali Primer be made available. Prof. Lily de Silva graciously consented to compile the answers. The book also contains a list of errors occurring in the Pali Primer with corrections.

It is hoped that this book will be of help to those interested in learning Pali, the mother tongue of the Buddha.

Buddhist Dictionary

by Nyanatiloka Thera.

Pali terms arranged in Roman-script alphabetical order; definitions include longer discussion of certain complex concepts; source references.

Since its first publication in 1952, Buddhist Dictionary has been a trusted companion and helper in the study of Buddhist literature. The author, Nyanatiloka Thera, was qualified as few others have ever been to serve as a reliable guide through the field of Theravada Buddhist terminology and doctrine.

In this book he offers authentic and lucid explanation of Pali Buddhist terms, with cross-references in English and source references as well. Amidst the welter of modern works on Buddhism, and translation differing one from the other, this book will help in identifying the doctrinal terms and in correcting misleading renderings. Not a mere word dictionary but an aid to the terminology of Theravada Buddhism.

Buddhist Dictionary will be as helpful to the serious lay student as to the professional scholar.

Definition of all the most important concepts in the teaching of the
Buddha arranged in alphabetical order. A Manual of Buddhist Terms & Doctrines.
